Current Mizãn Courses

Mizãn Courses are the core of what Mizãn stands for. Every course must meet a certain set standard, making it structured and efficient, yet thorough and encompassing as much relevant material as possible. Above all, quality is what sets these courses apart. For this purpose, they are based on the valuable works of great Islamic thinkers of the past and present, but in a simplified format, so that individuals without seminarian backgrounds can benefit from the wealth of knowledge that may have been inaccessible to them till today. All of this and more, bundled up in weekend on-site classes so that everyone can benefit, insha’allah.

Death and The Barzakh: Stages between Dunya and Resurrection

Throughout our lives, we have heard much about the details of what happens during and after death. Whether it be through reading the Holy Quran and hadiths or other books on the topic, or simply listening to lectures from our respectable scholars, we have a picture in our minds of what the afterlife looks like.

But it doesn’t end there and there is much more we are not aware of. While there are many works covering the details of what happens after death, there are a few that allow one to “understand” what happens. After all, there is a difference between just knowing something versus understanding the depths of it.

This course, while covering some details, aims for the higher goal of “understanding” the essence of the different aspects of death and the Barzakh, based on the works of the late Allamah Tabatabai in his advanced book of al-Insaan and Quranic commentary of al-Mizan, as well as the works of other great scholars of Islam and students of the late Allamah. this course is part 1 of a series on death and resurrection, covering from death till the barzakh and the blowing in the trumpets.

Introduction to the Science of Tafsir

Every major prophet has brought a miracle to his people. Musa (as) split the Sea, wind was at the disposal of Sulayman (as), Dawud (as) spoke to birds and Isa (as) cured the blind and the leper. There was a distinct change with the Final Prophet (saww). God sent down a masterpiece that would withstand the test of time - The Holy Qur’an. Since its revelation, it has been the subject of much reflection and study, and till today we find ourselves in need of revisiting its stories, parables, and principles in attempts to uncover even more of its secrets.

But how should we approach the Qur’an? Are there any rules to abide by? And where are these rules to originate from?

Fortunately, the Qur’an itself guides us to the answers of these questions. There is one fundamental condition to understand the Qur’an: surrender ourselves to the Qur’an. We must approach it with an open mind; a mind willing to accept what it offers to teach us, not one fixated on what the Qur’an ought to be like.

Join us as we delve into the science of Tafsir; where it started from, how it has developed, what rules govern it, and what it takes to become a true mufassir of the book that God swears by.

Principles of Khums

One of the struggles for today’s Muslim, next to all of the other financial obligations they might have, is figuring out how to take care of their khums dues. Usually, with all the financial complications of today, understanding how khums works can prove to be quite an arduous task. For this, all one needs to do is open up the Islamic Laws books and see if they can calculate their khums based on what they read! Sometimes, an individual will just give up and ignore this divine obligation for many years and not look back, all because of how hard it is to figure things out.

This course’s aim is to go through all the fine details of this Islamic precept with the help of more than just the conventional Islamic Law books but rather with the aid of even the most up to date rulings and explanations of our maraji’ on their websites and in Q&A’s received from their offices regarding contemporary financial issues and scenarios, and also some of the more detailed and complex sources penned by the maraji’ themselves. These details will be simplified and thoroughly explained so that after completion of the course, most individuals shouldn’t have to worry too much about figuring out their dues based on the views of their marja’ ever again!
